Interstate 70 closed at Georgetown all day today

The Colorado Department of Transportation will close Interstate 70 at Georgetown all day today for large-scale rock removal operations.

The closure will be from 9 a.m. to to 5 p.m. today, and the highway may be closed again on Wednesday if work isn’t completed on Tuesday.

The closure will extend from Silverthorne, Exit 205, to U.S. 40 at Empire, Exit 232.

Crews will be working to safely bring down a large, unstable cluster of boulders located on the slope above the highway. Engineers will not know how long it will take to remove all the boulders until the depth of the cluster can be fully examined.

While I-70 is closed, the primary detour routes to the Front Range are:

From Silverthorne, Highway 9 to Kremmling and then Highway 40 to Winter Park and over Berthoud Pass to Empire, 110 miles.

From Frisco, Highway 9 over Hoosier Pass to Fairplay, and then U.S. Highway 285 into the Denver area, 101 miles.
