Iraq attack about oil, not security

Dear Editor,

George W. Bush says that Iraq poses a threat to the United States. Don’t make me laugh!

Saddam Hussein may be a tyrant, but he’s not stupid. He would never directly attack us, because the consequences would be too great. We know where to find him – in Baghdad.

Sept. 11 has shown that the real threat to America comes not from nations but from nebulous terrorists groups like al-Qaida, which are much more difficult to locate and punish for their actions.

What about the `link’ between Iraq and al-Qaida Bush keeps mentioning? Don’t be fooled. Despite massive intelligence efforts by the CIA and FBI, there’s no evidence that Iraq has supported al-Qaida or was in any way responsible for the Sept. 11 attack.

So why the hell are we attacking Iraq? I can think of three good reasons:

1. War benefits Bush – it makes it “unpatriotic” to criticize his administration and distracts attention from domestic problems like the economy.

2. Iraq is a much easier target than al-Qaida (and Bush’s attempts to destroy al-Qaida have so far failed).

3. Unlike other `rogue’ states, for example Liberia, whose government did shelter senior al-Qaida operatives after the Sept. 11 attacks, Iraq has something Bush wants. The country sits on 112 billion barrels of oil – the largest supply in the world outside of Saudi Arabia.
