Is Glenwood for sale?

Gerry Vanderbeek

Dear Editor,

That certainly appears to be a long shot. But that doesn’t mean that someone is not trying. After the community’s grassroots success in forcing Red Feather Development to a public vote, the Oklahoma bank/developer has not let any grass grow under his feet.

Although I, like many in the community, am fundamentally opposed to Red Feather Ridge, I welcome an open, public campaign, highlighting both sides. Alas, that is not the developer’s strategy. Instead, he has hired an out-of-town pollster and public relations firm, choosing money rather than principles to drive his campaign.

Far from promoting his scheme to the public at large, the developer will host a “power dinner” at one of Glenwood’s finest restaurants on Thursday, March 13, to win over selected business and community leaders, hoping that any such support would then “trickle down” to the grassroots.

In Hamlet’s timeless words, “There is something rotten in Denmark.”

Apparently the developer wants to try the cyclical credo of big-league political operators that “Nothing has value unless it has a price in dollars.” But he forgets that the greatest values in life, such as our right to vote and community spirit, are “priceless.”

Here’s an idea. I suggest that on a Saturday, very soon, all concerned Glenwood voters and our many neighbors in Garfield County hold a community and family picnic on or near the proposed Red Feather Ridge to celebrate these priceless values.
