It’s not just about oil

Dear Editor,

I just read the letter to the editor titled, “Patriotism demands opposing war against Iraq,” (Aug. 4) and it blatantly obvious that Mr. Gray is not fully informed in regards to the facts concerning Iraq, or he just refuses to accept them. I tend to believe the latter.

It is a fact that Iraq has weapons of mass destruction. Saddam Hussein used them on his own people, the Kurds. By doing so, the use of these weapons has resulted in the death of over 15,000 people. Is there anyone foolish enough to believe that given the means to deliver such weapons on to America soil, Hussein would not do so?

Second, after the war with Iraq, weapons inspectors from the United Nations were kicked out of Iraq. Why do you think this happened? Common sense would tell most thinking people that Saddam Hussein had something to hide. This is not “paranoia”.

Third, the first war with Iraq was a result of Iraq invading Kuwait. Should we let Hussein deliver his weapons into Israel or America or some other country before we act? With that kind of thought process, even if America could have been able to prevent the attacks of Sept. 11, we would have had no right to do so because “everyone is innocent until proven guilty.” That would be ludicrous thinking at best! Is it still just about oil?

Finally Mr. Gray, I am one of those “folks” that has “those little American flags on my car,” and I am damn proud of it. Let me know if you have a problem with that.

I am proud to be an American. I am a true patriot. You may want to look up the definition of the word. I believe that America is the greatest country in the world because we are a free country. I believe this even if freedom of speech applies to liberals and other people that hate this country.

Thank you,

Doug Meyers
