It’s spring, so bridge construction fires up
As spring comes to the valley, construction will ramp up on the Grand Avenue bridge. As a result, in March and April you will see a corresponding increase in traffic impacts throughout the project.
Crews are working from Eighth Street over the Grand Avenue Bridge, in the Exit 116 interchange and in the Exit 114 interchange. Pavement overlays of Midland Avenue, U.S. 6 and some work on downtown streets will be scheduled in the coming months as well.
As we begin this construction season, we’d like to thank motorists for being patient. We also appreciate it when people going through the project sites play it safe by being aware of the construction happening around them. As the project team works to minimize impacts as much as possible, all of us must remember to work together as a community to reduce traffic on the traffic bridge detour.
March traffic impacts:
• From 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, expect one-lane closures on westbound Colorado 82 approaching Exit 116 and on Sixth Street from the bridge to Laurel Street. Shoulder closures on the Exit 116 westbound on-ramp will be intermittent Monday through Friday.
Both eastbound and westbound I-70 approaching Exit 116 will be reduced to one lane. These lane closures will be in place through April as crews complete safety critical overhead work on the new steel girders and bridge deck construction.
The left turn from the bridge to Eighth Street remains closed through April. Other April traffic impacts include:
The I-70 Exit 114 roundabout work will resume in April. During peak morning hours (7:30-8:30 a.m.), anticipate delays at Exit 114. Commuters are advised to use Exit 116 or shift their schedules when possible.
The I-70 Exit 116 eastbound on-ramp will be closed from 6-9 a.m., Monday through Friday, beginning April 3 for several weeks. Motorists are advised to use westbound I-70 to Exit 114 and access the eastbound on-ramp at the interchange. Crews are working on making intersection improvements.
Intersection work on Grand Avenue, Eighth Street and Ninth Street will begin to install new traffic signals on Colorado 82 for approximately three weeks:
April 3-4 – Eighth Street between Cooper and Grand avenues will be closed.
April 5-6 – Eighth Street between Colorado and Grand avenues will be closed.
April 7 and 10 – Ninth Street between Cooper and Grand avenues will be closed.
April 11-12 – Ninth Street between Colorado and Grand avenues will be closed.
Crews are completing railing installation, stair and deck work on the new pedestrian bridge. Thank you for your patience as we complete safety critical work in anticipation of an opening. We are working diligently to open the pedestrian bridge as soon as possible. Stay tuned for our progress update.
Safety message: Pedestrians and cyclists should stay on designated paths.
