JAS Labor Day lineup announced

ASPEN – Jazz Aspen Snowmass rode a handful of new artists to a big weekend. Young British singer-pianist Jamie Cullum and old rocker Elvis Costello both put on smash performances in their Jazz Aspen debuts during the June Festival recently, with former Phish singer-guitarist Trey Anastasio making his own first appearance on a Jazz Aspen last night.Jazz Aspen is set to use that same old formula of fresh faces in its Labor Day Festival. The 16-year-old nonprofit organization announced the lineup for its annual Labor Day Festival, set for Sept. 1-4, and those hungry for new sounds will be pleased.Hip-hopper Kanye West, country singer Leann Rimes, classic rocker John Mellencamp and Tex-Mex act Los Lonely Boys are all scheduled to make their local debuts at the Labor Day Festival. Joining them are reggae singer Matisyahu and one-man band Keller Williams, both playing their first Jazz Aspen shows. Returning to the Jazz Aspen stage are gospel-rock group Robert Randolph & the Family Band and blues-soul singer-guitarist Susan Tedeschi.Rimes and Tedeschi make an all-female bill for opening night, Sept. 1. West, who earned a best rap album Grammy for 2005’s “The College Dropout,” headlines Sept. 2, with Randolph and singer-guitarist Raul Midón playing opening sets.Heartland rocker Mellencamp headlines Sept. 3, preceded by Los Lonely Boys and Latino-rock act Del Castillo.
