John Burnham York

John B. York, 83 of Beverly, Mass., passed away March 6, 2009, at the Colorado State Veteran’s Nursing Home in Rifle.

He was born Aug. 14, 1925, in Beverly, to Myron and Alice York.

John served in the U.S. Navy as a gunner on a merchant marine ship in World War II.

John married Laura M. Pellicio August 1, 1948, in Beverly.

He was a welder at United Shoe, and a dedicated groundskeeper for a beautiful estate in Manchester for many years, for which he was loved.

He was a very active member of the American Legion, Post 64 in Hamilton, Mass., where he was also a past district commander.

He was a kind and devoted husband, father, and known to many as “Papa John.”

Survivors include son Richard J. York of Beverly; daughters Cheryl Ann (Laurie) York of Aspen, and Darlene F. (Harrison) York of New Castle; granddaughters Cassie Ann Harrison and Cadie Elizabeth Harrison of New Castle; sisters Reta E. Willey of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Frances A. Kale of Bridgewater, Va., Margie A. Douchtte of Sandwich, Mass., and Dottie Cotter of Clearmont, Fla.

The family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association,, or 1-800-272-3900 in his name.

His ashes will be interred in Massachusetts with his wife at a later date.
