Judges, market visitors enjoy entries in this years’s pie contest

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado – The pie baking contest at Glenwood’s Downtown Market on Aug. 21 showcased the talents of many fine bakers in our valley. The 30 creative and delicious pies wowed the judges and the lucky market-goers who purchased a slice of pie. We want to thank all the bakers who shared their pies with the community.

Thanks, also, to our judges who bravely did their duty under incredible pressure from the hungry onlookers. Four of this year’s judges were from The Pullman: Mark Fischer, John Little, Nicky Foust and Rick Dufon. We didn’t have to ask twice to get Kelley Cox and Charlie Wertheim, from the Post Independent, to be judges. Roaring Fork valley residents Frank Norwood, Mike Lowe and June Robinson also volunteered their time to judge the pies.

The Property Shop gals did a wonderful job again this year presenting tasting samples to the judges and then serving slices of pies to the waiting pie lovers.



This week, the market will host the talented Smuggler Mountain Boys in the music tent at 5:30 p.m. The Smuggler Mountain Boys are from the Roaring Fork Valley, playing playing good-old bluegrass music. Band members are Dave Notor, Craig Snow and Mike Leavy, with Ross Kribbs and Brennen Buckley. The music sponsor this week is Little River Ranch.

At 6 p.m we welcome the innovative chef de cuisine, John Chad Little, from The Pullman…Food and Drink in Glenwood Springs. Chef Little is responsible for the always changing, creative menu at the restaurant. He will be preparing dulce de leche bread pudding with Olathe Sweet corn ice cream and a local berry sauce.



The sweet corn from the produce vendors this season is sweeter than ever because of the dry growing season.

If you have been working in your garden this past weekend harvesting and preserving vegetables, you may want to have a chair massage at the market. This is the third summer at the market for Jo Bershenyi of Health Reflections Inc. This season she has welcomed Susan Dardine of Ground Life Therapy and Janell Cardiff-Forbes of Cardiff Therapy to join her weekly in offering chair massage to market attendees. You can stop by their booth next to the cooking demo tent each Tuesday and have a relaxing, rejuvenating 15-minute massage for $20. Each of the ladies has a private practice in Glenwood Springs.

Our Michael Pollan Food Rule this week is No. 22: “If it came from a plant, eat it; If it was made in a plant, don’t eat it.”

Glenwood’s Downtown Market takes place from 4 p.m. to dusk Tuesdays through Sept. 25 in Centennial Park at Ninth and Grand. “Celebrating Downtown Changes, A Sense of Community, Local Food and Art.”
