Kadets deflate Demons’ 4A state title dreams

If Air Academy isn’t in the Class 4A girls basketball finals, Glenwood Springs coach Bryan Derby would be shocked.

That’s how impressed Derby was with the Kadets, who took down the Demons, 59-24, in Saturday’s Sweet 16 playoff round.

“You know, they’ve got three girls over 6 foot,” he said. “If they don’t play for the final, then something’s wrong.”

Air Academy, host of one of 4A’s four-team Sweet 16 tournaments, went up 19-2 after a quarter and 33-7 at halftime.

Kenzie Nelson-Buehler’s 10 points led Glenwood, which finished its season at 20-5.

“The better team won, but my team never did lay down and die,” Derby said. “As a coach, that’s what you hope for. It’s a tough ending to a good year. I couldn’t be more proud of these kids.

“They fought for me through thick and thin. To make it to the final 16 teams in the state is pretty good.”

The Great Eight-bound Kadets improved to 23-2 with the win.
