Kevin Mahogany wraps up Summer of Jazz

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado ” Get ready to “Shake, Rattle and Roll” for the last time this season at Summer of Jazz. This Wednesday, vocalist Kevin Mahogany and his Kansas City Revue will close out the concert series at Two Rivers Park. While Mahogany is an innovator in jazz in his own right, he’ll be joining The Godfathers of Groove, Red Holloway and Kathy Kosins for a night of tribute to another jazz great, “Big” Joe Turner.

A singer for six decades, Big Joe was named so after his stature (6′ 2″ and 300 lbs.). His impact on the jazz world was equally weighty. Not only was he the voice behind “Shake,” but he also introduced the world to “Chains of Love,” “Cherry Red” and so many other boogie-woogie favorites.

Singing these old hits should be no problem for Mahogany. He’s already portrayed Turner in Robert Altman’s film, “Kansas City” and brought these tunes all over the country in tours.

For a more in-depth rundown on these two influential jazz cats, grab a copy of Wednesday’s paper. As always, the show will start at 7 p.m. that evening.
