Kids cost money

Andy AndersonGlenwood Springs

Dear Editor,I just finished reading your article on wages in the area. I couldn’t agree with you more about the daily struggle to make ends meet around here. One thing you missed in the article is the cost of children. I am a single dad with four kids who has lived in Glenwood Springs for 12 years. When my now ex-wife left in 1998 for greener pastures, I was under the naive assumption that most kids had two parents and the single-parent kid was an anomaly. Once I became the one doing the “mom” stuff (she was a stay-at-home mom and I was a dad working 80 hours a week – hence her unhappiness), I soon found out that in this area, kids with both of their original parents are very rare indeed. Some have two parents, but one is a “replacement.” Many just have one parent. The cost of daycare rivals that of food and other essentials. The cost of clothing the kids, feeding them, and the “nonessential” but necessary things such as birthday parties (throwing ours and attending others), Christmas, etc. is brutal on an already stretched budget. And this does not include things that I consider necessary for raising a kid such as soccer, little league, gymnastics, swimming, skiing, etc. This is not a complaint nor a plea for help. I just wanted to point out to you that, although your article was completely accurate in my opinion, you missed what is to me one of my major expenses, kids. I am sure there are a lot of other single parents in the area who had the same thought once they finished your article.Andy AndersonGlenwood SpringsP.S. Not a day goes by that my kids and I do not comment on how beautiful a town we live in and how lucky we are to live here. Even if we are broke.
