Know the facts

Dear Editor,Bill Barrett Corporation placed a Citizen Telegram advertisement providing information about them and the energy industry. They encouraged people to “Know the facts about natural gas and natural gas exploration.” I researched and found “Oil and Gas at Your Door? A Landowner’s Guide to Oil and Gas Development” written by the Oil & Gas Accountability Project. This is what I found:If a company/individual owns or leases mineral rights to oil and gas beneath land you own, as surface owner, that party has the right to search your property for resources and remove any found. Additionally, ” . . . in many cases, owners of the mineral rights do not have to compensate the surface owners for use of their property.” Depending upon the state, these “rights” may also be included in the right to:• Mine dirt and gravel for constructing roads, drill pads, etc., from the premises.• Construct roads to drill sites (including cutting and removing timber).• Take a reasonable amount of water for development and production of oil and gas.• Dispose of fresh or salt water, produced with oil and gas on premises.• House employees on the premises.• Construct or install production and storage facilities.• Select drilling sites and timing of drilling operations.• Install and use pipelines.• Enter premises despite existence of growing crops.More can and should be done to minimize negative environmental impact during extraction operations, including a sincere effort to cooperate with surface owners to minimize impact on private property.John SeeseParachuteParachute
