Labor Day ’05 arson at Rifle Amoco

David Valencia’s Amoco service station was one of two businesses destroyed in the Sept. 5, 2005, Labor Day fires that broke out in the early morning hours, targeting businesses from north to south Rifle.The Rifle Fireside Lanes in north Rifle, owned by Jack and Ava Bowles, was also heavily damaged with a loss at an estimated $1 million. An apartment complex and Mexican restaurant suffered minor damage from attempted fire.In April 2006, Robin Jay Clifton, 46, of Collbran, was arrested in connection with the fires. Clifton is currently out on a $210,000 bond and is scheduled to appear back in court on July 7.Both Valencia and the Bowleses are rebuilding their businesses with the bowling alley scheduled to open sometime in June and the service station in July.
