Latest Fielder book features cover shot of Glenwood Canyon

Renowned nature photographer John Fielder has released his latest book, “Colorado 1870-2000 II,” which features Glenwood Canyon on the cover. The 7-pound leather-bound book, a sequel to “Colorado 1870-2000 William H. Jackson/John Fielder,” features images from Jackson, an early western photographer, in the year 1870 compared to Fielder’s photographs more than 100 years later.”The W.H. Jackson image made in 1891 shows the canyon not long after the railroad was completed through the canyon. I felt that the tents and the obvious lack of I-70, as well as the beautiful canyon/river setting, made the historic photo appealing,” said Fielder, on choosing the Glenwood Canyon photos for the covers. “The spring greens in my ‘now’ image, plus the addition of that beautifully constructed highway, made my image appealing too. And who doesn’t know Glenwood Canyon and lovely Glenwood Springs?”In 1998, Fielder drove 25,000 miles and backpacked another 500 to stand exactly where Jackson, his 19th-century protégé, stood. From 300 different Jackson locations, Fielder pointed his camera in the same direction as his predecessor to manifest the change in Colorado’s landscape over a century in time.Only 156 of the original then-and-now photo pairs made the cut for the first book. Seven years later, the rest of the project was unveiled in “Colorado 1870-2000 II.”Fielder will appear in Glenwood Springs for a slide presentation and book signing on Wednesday, Nov. 16, at the Glenwood Springs Library. “Colorado 1870-2000 II” is now available at Through the Looking Glass, Book Train and other valley bookstores.
