DENVER (AP) ” Four environmental groups say they will sue to prevent the sale of federal oil and gas leases on the Roan Plateau.

The groups say they’ll file a formal protest of plans to issue leases on public on the western Colorado landmark.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management plans to offer leases on about 55,000 acres of federal land on the Roan Plateau during an Aug. 14 auction in Denver.

Area communities, environmental groups, Gov. Bill Ritter and members of Colorado’s congressional delegation oppose BLM’s plan for the plateau, saying more protection is needed for wildlife and the environment.

The Roan Plateau, 180 miles west of Denver, prized for its oil and gas reserves as well its ecological and recreational values.
