Leadership is about service

Dear Editor:

This letter is in response to a recent letter to the editor from Rachel Ware pertaining to Carbondale’s economic decisions needing some heart and soul. Thank you, Rachel, for your stirring perspective. I too for a long time have been wrestling with my own feelings about what is right for our special community. Your words were a breath of fresh air, both scintillating and comforting.

Very briefly, I would like to add that I think leadership is about service and the best kind of leadership is based on enduring, civic values. This kind of value based on leadership is not a new idea. Way back in 1932, then Rotary International president Herbert J. Taylor created a four-point test to measure quality of leadership. In this test he asked four basic “value” questions about the leadership of any given person:

1. Does it tell the truth?

2. Is it fair to all concerned?

3. Does it build goodwill and better friendships?

4. Does it benefit everyone concerned?

Thanks for your time,

Chris Chacos
