Leadville man injured in ATV rollover

A Leadville man received life-threatening injuries Saturday when the all-terrain vehicle he was driving rolled about 1.5 miles from the summit of Hagerman Pass at the head of the Fryingpan Valley, according to authorities.

The victim, Todd Shepherd, 48, was airlifted by helicopter from the top of the pass and flown to a Denver hospital, according to Jerry Peetz, Basalt assistant fire chief.

A hunter called authorities from the top of the pass around 2:25 p.m. to report a man unconscious on the road and bleeding, according to the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office incident report. Medical teams from Thomasville and Basalt were dispatched and began arriving at about 3:10 p.m. A medical helicopter stationed in Frisco was placed on standby and later called because of the nature of Shepherd’s injuries.

He crashed in wooded terrain where power transmission lines run near the road. The helicopter couldn’t safely land at the accident site so an ambulance transported him to the top of the rugged pass.

The incident report doesn’t disclose the cause of the crash. People who observed the scene said it appeared Shepherd ran off the road, overcorrected the four-wheeler and rolled. He wasn’t wearing a helmet.

“He had life-threatening injuries,” Peetz said. No update on his condition was available Monday.
