Leonora Jennie (Johnson) Jacobs
Glenwood Springs, CO Colorado
Leonora Jennie (Johnson) Jacobs passed away peacefully at her daughter’s home in Dolores, CO on Dec. 25, 2009. She was 93.
Leonora was born in Haxton, CO on Feb. 3, 1916 to August Johnson of Sweden and Thora Jensen Johnson of Denmark. She and her three siblings grew up in Brush. The family moved to Greeley when Leonora was in high school and she continued her education, earning a two-year teaching certificate from Greeley Teacher’s College. She began teaching at the age of 19 in El Jebel, where she stayed for three years, then returned to the plains of CO., and taught for a year in Nunn. A year later, the Western Slope, and a gentleman named Keith Jacobs, welcomed her back. She taught a year on the Frying Pan near Ruedi, before marrying Keith on Dec. 24, 1939 in her family home in Greeley. They returned to the ranch near Emma, where her first two sons were born.
After a two year WWII separation, they moved to Greeley where they both completed their college educations, and Leonora welcomed four more children.
Returning to Carbondale, Keith taught and Leonora, always caring for her family, gave birth to two more children, then on to Silt to welcome their ninth child and establishing their permanent home. When her youngest was in 3rd grade, Leonora returned to teaching, first at Antlers, then in Silt, where she delighted in her first graders. She taught a total of 26 years, retiring at the age of 67.
After Keith’s death in 1982, Leonora moved to Denver to live with her daughter Janelle. She enjoyed traveling with her sister, BJ, and friend JL, visiting Europe twice, and a third extended visit in Denmark and Sweden with relatives. One of her fondest memories was attending the premier of “Cats” in London. Hawaii and numerous trips to Mexico to enjoy vacations with her children delighted her. With Denver as her home base, and an ever-increasing number of grandchildren and great grandchildren to welcome, Leonora continued traveling among her expanding family.
Leonora enjoyed crocheting, sewing, canning and power shopping for “deals” on groceries, never without her coupons. The past six years with her daughter Marla in Dolores, found her in her vegetable garden at the break of dawn, tending the plants that she’d start in March, with family visiting her, especially during harvest.
Preceding Mrs. Jacobs in death were brother, Dr. Walter Johnson, sister Mildred Atkinson, husband Keith Jacobs, sons Karl Jacobs and Jerry Jacobs, daughter Janelle O’Brien, and grandson Seth Paul.
Mrs. Jacobs is survived by sister Betty Jane Levy, Vancouver WA; six children, Keith (Gail) Jacobs, Boise ID, John (Ann) Jacobs, Bayfield, CO, William (Bonnie) Jacobs, Payson UT, Diane (Lee) Capps, Rifle, Forrest (Laurie) Jacobs, Silt, and Marla (Doug) Paul, Dolores; 26 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren.
At Mrs. Jacobs’ request, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made for student supplies or library books to the school of choice.
Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009 at 1 p.m. at Rosebud Cemetery in Glenwood Springs, CO. Family and friends will gather at the LDS church in Glenwood after the services to share in the joys of Leonora’s life.
