Let firefighter go home, heal after accident

Dear Editor,

To the entity(s) responsible for the charges pending against the unfortunate young firewoman who had the chilling experience of rolling her crew’s van: You should be ashamed of yourselves. You all need to get a life. A hapless young hero, bent on traveling from one fire to another, driving an overweight, top-heavy van, inappropriate equipment for an exhausted fire team member who is not experienced with unwieldy large vehicles. Large long vans, regardless of the manufacturers, are all notoriously easy rollovers at high speed.

Firefighting is inherently dangerous work and highways are always dangerous. Stuff happens in the West.

Let Megan go home to Oregon and heal her already deep wounds with her family. Let her return to the battlefield proud and resilient and more experienced. Prosecutors – get a job. Or do you feel compelled to get your hands in everyone’s pockets, even cross-country fire crews who’ve only been in your county scant minutes before having a tragedy?

I feel certain that, had this unfortunate accident occurred in any other county, it would have been viewed and treated as just that, an unfortunate accident, not as a crime.

Sincerely thankful for firefighters,

Richard Oramood
