Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor,

As a longtime member of the community, it is with great regret that I read about the closure of two fixtures of the area, Tim’s Tools and Ben-Rex. I moved back to Arizona five years ago, but regularly read the news in both the Independent and the Rifle Telegram.

I worried that Wal-Mart would drive the smaller, more local friendly stores out of business, and it has. My children loved to ride the horse in front of Ben-Rex when they were young, and enjoy those memories now as adults.

I now live in Cottonwood, Ariz., also a small-town community, and it is with great dread I watch the local Super Wal-Mart being built. I’m sure it will run the smaller grocery store out of business, and many of the locally owned businesses that struggle to maintain a place in the community. Although change is inevitable, it is so hard to see small businesses suffer from the growth, rather than benefit from it.
