Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor,

What an interesting coincidence it was that the Denver Post printed a lead article on the facts concerning global warming the same day (Dec. 26) that a letter from R. Moolick appeared in the GSPI pooh-poohing the existence of global warming. One doesn’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that dumping millions of tons of CO2 and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere will increase global temperatures by reducing the amount of infra-red radiation leaving the earth.

Leading scientists have published numerous papers verifying this phenomenon in the internationally recognized journals of Science, Nature, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. These journals don’t publish quack science since each paper is peer reviewed by several scientists of international reputation.

Bush has disgraced our nation by refusing to support both the Kyoto accord and restrictions to limit our rampant consumption of fossil fuels (the major source of greenhouse gases). A stated reason behind this is that it will cost industry too much to make the necessary changes. However, this shortsighted “reasoning” fails to consider the trillions of dollars that the ravages of global warming will eventually cost our society. Once again, short-term corporate benefits are put ahead of the greater public good.

It’s time we pull our heads out of the sand and recognize that global warming presents one of the greatest problems we will have to face in the coming century. It is imperative that the USA joins other nations to reduce greenhouse emissions and develop alternative energy sources.
