Library board to meet director candidates

Staff Report

The Garfield Library District board has scheduled interviews for two candidates for director of the six-branch operation.

The candidates are Sam Passey, director of the Uintah County Library in Utah; and Judith “Sue” Lathrop, director of the Clear Creek Library District in Colorado.

Passey is to be interviewed May 5 and Lathrop on May 12, both at 6 p.m. at the Glenwood Springs Branch Library. The interviews are open to the public.

Amelia Shelley, who directed the Garfield County Public Library District through its formative years, including the construction of four libraries and two remodels, left last year to take a job in Vancouver, Washington.

Shelley, director of the Garfield library district starting in December 2007, is leading the Fort Vancouver Regional Library District, a system that serves three counties with a population of 450,000 people and includes 14 libraries and two bookmobiles.

Shelley said at the time that the new position allowed her and her husband, Jim, to be closer to one of their grown children who lives in Vancouver and was recently married.

Questions regarding the interviews can be directed to Sandra Kister, interim executive director, at 970-625-4270.
