Library hosts new Independent Filmfest

There may be slight hyperbole at work when Carbondale’s Gordon Cooper Library calls its new Independent Filmfest an “international award winning” event ” especially when it hasn’t started yet and they haven’t quite finalized the schedule.

But hopes are still very high for what will be a very intimate film series.

Beginning today, Friday, March 19, at 8 p.m., the library will begin a series of five screenings over a 10-week period, with more movies appearing April 2, 16, 30 and May 14. And with space for only 50 viewers per show, filmgoers are asked to stop by the library before the performance to pick up free tickets and reserve their spaces for future showing.

The filmfest launches with “Long Life, Happiness and Prosperity,” a Canadian film that profiles life in Vancouver’s thriving Chinese community.

The movie tells the story of a single mother raising a 12-year-old daughter; when the daughter enlists the power of ancient Chinese magic to help find her mom a new boyfriend, there are some rather unexpected results.

The movie has a few subtitles but is mostly in English and is suitable for high school-aged kids and adults.

A schedule for the upcoming films has yet to be finalized, but library staff say you’ll see a variety of independent productions from around the world.

None of the movies are rated but some may portray adult situations and themes and are not recommended for children under 17 without adult supervision.
