`Life’s Values’ essay contest announced

The Pitkin County Library is sponsoring an essay contest for seventh-graders and high school sophomores at schools in the Roaring Fork Valley.

Essay winners will get cash prizes ranging from $100 to $500.

The theme is “Life’s Values.”

“Our goal in this endeavor is to help young people reflect on values important in today’s world while emphasizing excellence in research,” said assistant librarian Debra Muzikar. “The essay contest offers young people a chance to identify their values and ideals.”

Entry forms are available at the Pitkin County Library and schools in the Roaring Fork Valley.

Seventh-graders must write about values that are important to them by describing a famous person in American history who portrays those qualities. The essays must be 1,000 words or less.

Sophomores must select the person of the year who reflects their values. Their essays must be no longer than 1,200 words.

Essays are due by Nov. 8. They’ll be judged by a panel of local officials, teachers and librarians. Winners will be notified by the end of the year.

The essays should be delivered to the Pitkin County Library or mailed to the library at 120 N. Mill St., Aspen, CO 81611, and marked Essay Contest.

For more information, call the Pitkin County Library at 925-3935.
