RIFLE – The Garfield County Coroner’s Office released the names Saturday of the man and woman who were killed by lightning on Thursday.

Paul Shideler, 51, and Deborah Rothey, 48, both of the Silt area, were killed Thursday as they tried to take shelter under a tree from a thunderstorm.

The two were horseback riding at the time, said Lanny Grant, president of Garfield County Search and Rescue. Their bodies were found Friday in a remote area near Middle Mamm Creek.

“They’d apparently tied their horses up underneath a tree and had taken shelter there” when the lightning struck, Grant said.

The lightning didn’t start a fire.
