Local kids pick Kerry in three-district Kids Voting

Kids voting results from Silt, Rifle and New Castle reversed the preliminary presidential outcome among local communities’ youth in the mock election.Student in Basalt, Carbondale, Glenwood and Parachute gave John Kerry 1,500 votes and George Bush 1,459 votes. When Garfield School District Re-2 was factored into the mix, votes for Bush surged to 2,237 and votes for Kerry barely increased, to 1,911.”I knew it would change when Rifle was factored in,” said Brenda Buchanan, affiliate director of Kids Voting. “The Re-2 district traditionally votes more Republican than the rest of the valley.”Silt, Rifle and New Castle tend to be more Republican, which affects the way kids votes because kids are politically influenced by their parents, Buchanan said.Kids may vote along the same party lines as their parents but they didn’t show up at the polls with the same frequency as their parents. In Garfield County 70 percent of registered voters voted. Among the three school districts – Re-2, Roaring Fork School District Re-1 and Garfield School District No. 16 – only 45 percent of students made it to the polls. This is the first time all three local districts have participated in Kids Voting and Buchanan is excited about the turnout.”This was such a great year to launch this program because it was such an exciting election,” Buchanan said. “We need more solid education in schools to make informed voters.”Contact Ivy Vogel: 945-8515, ext. 534ivogel@postindependent.com
