Local Kmart spared the ax

The Glenwood Springs Kmart will stay open – at least for now.

Known for the Martha Stewart collection and BlueLight specials, Glenwood Springs’ store is not on the list of 284 KMart stores slated for closure throughout the United States.

In fact, just three Colorado Kmart stores are on the chopping block: Fountain, Louisville and Parker.

On Friday, Kmart Corp., operating under bankruptcy protection since Jan. 22, announced the store closures and the elimination of 22,000 jobs as part of its reorganization process.

The manager of the Glenwood Springs store declined to comment on the news and a spokesman did not return calls.

Some customers, however, did comment on the news.

“I don’t shop here much, but it’s right up the street so it’s convenient,” West Glenwood resident Renee Mason said. “Also, a lot of people come here.”

Another local resident, Dean Carlson, said he’s glad Kmart is staying put.

“I think it’s good that they don’t close it because we don’t have much shopping in Glenwood,” he said. “Also it keeps people working.”

Meeker resident Renae Blazon drives an hour and a half to shop at the Glenwood Springs Kmart.

“But I’m glad it’s here – it’s better than the one in Craig,” she said.

Nationwide, Texas will see the most stores pull out, with 33 planned closures. Illinois and Michigan also were hit hard, with 21 and 18 respectively, followed by California, 16, Florida, 15 and Georgia, 14.

The rest of the closures were spread fairly evenly through 34 other states and Puerto Rico.
