RIFLE – The Colorado State Patrol has charged a 15-year-old driver for being at fault in a one-car rollover accident in Rifle on Tuesday. The boy’s name and the criminal charges are being withheld because he is under age.At 8:50 p.m. Tuesday, a 2004 Dodge pickup headed south on County Road 246, also known as Prefontaine Road, collided with a utility pole and rolled once. The crash occurred in front of the bus lot next to Rifle High School. A 23-year-old male passenger sustained serious injuries in the accident and was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction. The driver was not seriously injured. Neither the driver nor the passenger was wearing a seat belt, according to a state patrol report.The collision caused a brief power outage for a small area in Rifle. Xcel Energy replaced the pole and restored power shortly after the crash, state patrol reported.State Patrol is investigating the crash, and alcohol and excessive speed are believed to be contributing factors.Also assisting at the accident were the Rifle Police Department and the Garfield County Sheriff’s office.

A natural rock slide covering both the eastbound and westbound lanes of Interstate 70 stopped traffic in South Canyon at 4:05 p.m. Thursday. Both lanes were reopened by 4:37 p.m. However traffic remained slow during the day’s rush hour.
