PARACHUTE, Colorado ” Fire officials said the 150-acre Housetop Fire southwest of Parachute was declared contained around 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Two engines from Mesa County and the 20-person Juniper Valley Crew will continue to mop up and monitor the fire for the next several days, said Bureau of Land Management public information officer David Boyd, in a news release.

Over 100 firefighters and two helicopters worked the fire Wednesday. It was ignited Monday night in pinyon-juniper, sage and cheatgrass vegetation by lightning.

Federal firefighting crews, Mesa County, local fire departments from Parachute, Rifle and Carbondale, plus the Juniper Valley Hand Crew all fought the fire.

RIFLE, Colorado ” The Colorado Department of Transportation announced Wednesday the closure of the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 on-ramp at exit 90.

Variable message signs will alert traffic of this closure and CDOT has provided the following alternate routes. Highway 6 into Silt, West from Rifle on Highway 6 to the West Rifle Exit 87. And south on highway 13 to Airport Road, then east to Garfield County Airport/Mamm Creek, I-70 interchange Exit 94.

Construction on the interchange is expected to continue through September.
