The Colorado Department of Transportation will open Independence Pass on Highway 82 for the season today at 2 p.m., just in time for Memorial Day holiday travel. Last year the opening was delayed until after the holiday, due to adverse weather.

Crews on the both east and west sides have spent the past few days and weeks with avalanche control (east side), clearing snow, clearing ditches, sweeping, repairing pot holes, striping, signing, repairing guardrail and much more.

The 12,095-foot pass is closed each winter, due to harsh winter weather conditions, for the safety of the traveling public.

Aspen Valley Medical Foundation (AVMF) will accept applications for its 2009 round of Community Grants, to health and human service organizations throughout the Roaring Fork Valley region, until June 5 at 3 p.m.

The grants fund qualified not-for-profit [501(c)(3)] organizations that meet public health and human service needs. Updated 2009 grant guidelines and application are available at http://avmfaspen.org/whoWeSupport/health-humanServ.html or by calling 970-544-1241.

Grants are distributed either to Partners, for three years, or to Affiliates on a year-to-year basis. In 2008, AVMF awarded $440,000 in Community Grants over 30 non-profit organizations from Aspen to Glenwood Springs.

Funds are raised through AVMF’s Neighbor to Neighbor campaign, a payroll deduction program, or through one-time contributions
