PARACHUTE, Colorado – A Parachute man was hospitalized Monday afternoon after a gun he was cleaning accidentally fired.

According to a brief report on the incident, Garfield County deputies responded to Grand River Medical Center in Rifle for a report of a gunshot wound.

A male party, whose name was not released Tuesday, told deputies that he was cleaning his .22 caliber handgun and dropped it. The gun fired, hitting the male in the “rectal” area and exiting his leg.

According to Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Holly Hopple the incident was determined to be an accident. No further information was available, and there was no update on the victim’s condition.

GRAND JUNCTION, Colorado – Fire crews with the Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire Management Unit have responded to a fire in Hunters Canyon this afternoon, about 15 miles north-northwest of Grand Junction on the north end of the Bookcliffs. Firefighters were called out at 1:20 p.m. this afternoon. By 5:30 p.m., the fire had grown to about 25 acres.

The fire is burning upslope in a remote area that includes rocky, steep terrain with a fuel mix of pinyon-juniper, desert scrub and grasses. No structures are threatened.

Resources on the fire include two engine crews, a single-engine air tanker, an air supervision lead plane, a helitanker, and a helitack crew. In total, 15 firefighters are on the ground attacking the fire and are expected to staff the fire overnight.
