Burning Mountains Fire Protection District personnel responded to a house fire on Home Avenue in Silt around 1 a.m. Thursday morning, according to Fire Chief Brit McLin. There were no injuries or deaths reported; the residents all got out without incident. Glenwood Fire and Rifle Fire Protection District both responded with mutual aid. The cause of the fire is under investigation, McLin said.

EnCana Oil & Gas (USA) Inc. is in search of high school seniors who exhibit a solid academic record, embody community involvement and leadership, and plan to pursue a post-secondary education related to the oil and gas industry.Scholarship recipients will be awarded a maximum of $10,000 or $2,500 per year for up to four years. One scholarship will be awarded annually to one graduating senior in EnCana’s Piceance Basin area of operation, including the following high schools: Coal Ridge, Grand Valley, Meeker, Rangely and Rifle.”Our goal is to invest in our future workforce by providing scholarship funds for either a two-year diploma, certificate in a trade program, or a four-year college degree,” said Joyce Witte, EnCana community investment advisor. “EnCana’s scholarship program provides the resources for our youth to advance their education, and enhances the quality of developing a sustainable workforce. We all benefit.” The student must declare a field of study in petroleum, chemical, mechanical or environmental engineering, geology, geophysics, or technical/trade programs such as oil and gas process technology or land administration.Last year’s scholarship recipients were Jared Doll of Meeker High School, Michael Larson of Coal Ridge High School, Francisco Lavis of Rifle High School, Peter Walz of Rangely High School and Derek Witt of Grand Valley High School.All qualified seniors are encouraged to submit an application. The scholarship is awarded directly to the student, and can be used for any college-related financial need, including tuition and fees, textbooks and rent.Final selections of the scholarship winners will be made by individual school districts.
