The Garfield County Search and Rescue team conducted an agency assist search and recovery mission with the Denver Police Department Thursday. The search covered the area of the Colorado River between the Grizzly Creek boat ramp downstream to the No Name area.

No information regarding the purpose of the search was released by authorities Friday. The Garfield County Sheriff’s Office forwarded requests to the Denver Police Department. Requests for information to the DPD were not returned Friday.

The Williams gas drilling company experienced a spill from one of its well pads on April 13 near Parachute, sending as much as 160 barrels of fluid into nearby Cottonwood Gulch, said company representative Susan Alvillar on Friday.

She said the fluid was “flowback water,” which is liquid and other substances that rise out of a well bore after the hydraulic fracturing process.

Alvillar said the fluid had undergone “a treatment process,” separating the water from gas, oil, sand and other contaminants, and was in a holding tank when a valve was inadvertently left open.

She said the company estimated that only about 10 barrels worth of the fluid actually reached the Colorado River. She also said that the communities of Parachute and Battlement Mesa, which have intakes downriver from Cottonwood Gulch were alerted about the spill and reported no evidence of contamination after testing their water.
