The 9th Judicial District Commission on Judicial Performance will be holding a public hearing on Wednesday, May 26, 2010, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Garfield County Courthouse in Rifle (200 West 18th St.). The 9th Judicial District Judges scheduled to stand for retention in 2010 are: District Court Judge Gail Nichols, County Court Judge Jason Jovanovich, County Court Judge Paul Metzger, County Court Judge Erin Fernandez-Ely, and County Court Judge Laurie Noble.

Any person who is interested in making a comment on the performance of these judges may speak at this hearing. Time for comments will be limited, however, to allow time for all to address the Commission. Please contact District Administrator Solveig Olson, 970-878-5622, by May 19, 2010 to make arrangements for interpreter needs or Americans with Disabilities accommodations.

The Judicial Performance Commission evaluates information about the performance of judges through public hearings and random surveys sent to attorneys, prosecutors, public defenders, litigants, jurors, peace officers, and others who may have appeared before each judge. Commission members also observe the judges in their courtrooms, read decisions issued by the judges, and review statistics, including caseloads and case types. Judges also complete a self evaluation and are interviewed by commission members.

The Judicial Performance Commission utilizes this information to provide voters with a ‘Retain’ or ‘Do Not Retain’ recommendation for the Blue Books distributed to all voters before the November election.
