U.S. Rep. John Salzar, D-3rd District, will visit Aspen on Oct. 3 to meet with students from rural Colorado at the Western Slope College Fair, and to join Democrats for a picnic.

The college fair is to be held from 10-11:30 a.m. at Aspen High School, and the picnic will start at 11:30 a.m. and run until 1 p.m. at Paepcke Park on Main Street.

U.S. Senator Michael Bennet, D-Colo., announced Thursday that Carbondale and Rifle Police Departments will receive a total of $433,813 in competitive COPS Hiring Program Grants from the Department of Justice to create, or preserve law enforcement jobs.

The Carbondale Police Department will receive $239,331, while the Rifle Police Department will receive $194,482. The funds will be used to support one full-time officer per department for a three year period.

The program grants funding to address the full-time sworn officer needs of state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies nationwide. Program grants go directly to law enforcement agencies to hire new, or rehire officers in an effort to increase their community policing capacity and crime prevention efforts.

The grants provide 100 percent funding for approved entry-level salaries and benefits for three years for newly-hired, full-time sworn officer positions, or rehired officers who have been laid off, or are scheduled to be laid off at a future date, as a result of local budget cuts.

Any additional costs above the approved entry-level salaries and fringe benefits are the responsibility of the local agency.
