CARBONDALE, Colorado – A controlled burn northeast of Carbondale on U.S. Bureau of Land Management terrain sent up a plume of smoke noticed by residents of the area on Thursday.

David Boyd, public relations official for the BLM office in Silt, confirmed late Thursday that BLM personnel were burning piles of brush cleared and accumulated during last summer and fall.

Boyd said they have a considerable amount of accumulated brush yet to burn this winter, while there is little chance of the fires spreading.

The future controlled burns, Boyd said, are likely to take a total of a few days, but those days may be spread out depending on weather conditions.

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado – Carl Vincent “Skeeter” Avery, 47, has canceled his registration in Garfield County as a resident sexually violent predator, after finding a job in Oklahoma, according to the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office. He initially registered in Garfield County in late October 2011.

Avery continues his registration with Grand Junction Police Department, as he maintains a residence in that area.

Sex offenders are required by the state of Colorado to de-register when establishing residence and employment in another state.

A story in the Jan. 16 Post Independent contained an incorrect contact number for Jon Warnick, a Republican precinct officer in Carbondale. His correct number is (970) 618-4146.
