Attention ice anglers: Colorado Parks and Wildlife and the Rifle Chamber of Commerce will be hosting the 14th annual Ice Fishing Tournament at Rifle Gap State Park on Jan. 21-22.

This two-day event is an opportunity to ice fish in a family-friendly setting. Prizes will be awarded for largest rainbow trout, brown trout and yellow perch.

For adults 18 and older, there are cash prizes for the top five lengths of each species. There will also be prizes for youths between 11 and 17 years old and for kids ages 10 and under. The lucky angler who lands the biggest fish will win a chance at $20,000.

All participants must register with the Rifle Area Chamber of Commerce at http://www.riflechamber.com or at 625-2085. A valid daily or annual Colorado State Park pass is required for all vehicles entering the park and a valid Colorado fishing license is also required for all participants.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife urges ice fishermen to take common-sense precautions when venturing onto the ice. Always fish with a partner and always drill test holes to determine ice thickness.

Each angler should wear a life jacket and carry ice picks, 50 feet of rope and a cell phone. Park rangers also recommend that anglers stay away from cracks, pressure ridges and slushy or darker areas that signify thinner ice.

To learn more about being safe on the ice, visit parks.state.co.us/Pages/IceSafety.aspx.

For more information about this event, contact the Rifle Area Chamber of Commerce at http://www.riflechamber.com or 625-2085.

Eric Foerster, the superintendent at Ironbridge Golf Club, has completed the renewal process for maintaining his status as a Certified Golf Course Superintendent (CGCS) with the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA).

Foerster has been at Ironbridge Golf Club since 2004. A 13-year GCSAA member, he initially achieved his certification in 2007. Approximately 1,700 golf course superintendents worldwide currently hold CGCS status.

To qualify for GCSAA’s new competency-based certification program, a candidate must have at least three years experience as a golf course superintendent, be employed in that capacity and meet post-secondary educational requirements and/or continuing education points.

Maintaining certified status requires renewal every five years after the initial date of certification. To fulfill certification renewal requirements, a candidate must participate in 150 hours of continuing education and professional development.
