Young wrestlers competing out of New Castle took to the mats at the recent Rocky Mountain Nationals Tournament, held in Denver.

Josiah Rider placed first in the 10-and-under age group at 81 pounds and placed fourth in the 12U, 82-pound age division.

He was also named the 10U division’s Outstanding Wrestler and won the Rocky Mountain Nationals’ Triple Crown for a third time (triple winners are those who took first place in three national-level tournaments in one season).



Drake Montgomery placed second at 10U’s 100-pound weight class.

Also competing were Cody Lacey, Kaylee Lacey, Myles Wilson, Amos Wilson, Andrew Leyba, Neil Schultz, Tucker Schultz and Collin Carbone



The wrestlers are coached by Trever Rider and Josh Wilson.

The 11th annual Grand River Gallop 5K Run and 2K Family Fun Walk will be held April 10 in Rifle.

Registration will be at 8 a.m. at the Grand River Hospital and Medical Center. The race starts at 9 a.m.

The entry fee is $18 in advance and $20 on race day. The cost is $30 for families in advance and $35 on race day. For an entry form, visit http://www.grhd.org, pick one up at Grand River Hospital and Medical Center or call 625-6439.

This event benefits Meals on Wheels of Western Garfield County and is part of the Colorado River Valley Charity Race Series.

In conjunction with Skirt Sports, Independence Run and Hike in Carbondale will be hosting Diva Night on April 9. The event will feature a talk by Nicole DeBoom, a professional triathlete and founder of Skirt Sports, which is a running clothing company for women.

The event is ladies-only and starts at 5:30 p.m. Featured will be a bra fitting and information station sponsored by Moving Comfort, a Komen Breast Cancer Awareness station, massage seats and a fashion show with the latest Skirt Sports products.

The event will be catered by Eco-Goddess. Goodie bags will be handed out to the first 35 women who show up and there will be a raffle. DeBoom will speak at around 6:30 p.m.

In addition, DeBoom will be running with Independence’s regular Saturday morning run group on April 10. The group runs every Saturday morning. Runners meet at the store at 8 a.m. and take off at 8:30 a.m. Anybody is welcome to run.
