17-year-old arrested for El Jebel robbery
A 17-year-old midvalley resident was arrested by detectives from the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office Thursday for the alleged armed robbery of a liquor store Monday in El Jebel.
The suspect was identified as Rodrigo Ivan Aguilar, of El Jebel. He was arrested for aggravated robbery, a class 3 felony; first-degree criminal trespass, a class 5 felony; aggravated felony menacing, a class 5 felony; theft of $300 to $750, a class 2 misdemeanor; and violation of a protection order, a class 2 misdemeanor, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Pictures of the alleged robber that were captured by a video surveillance system at the El Jebel Plaza helped with the arrest, according to Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Jessie Mosher. “We got an anonymous tip from someone who identified him from the pictures,” she said.
Deputies found Aguilar at his home in the El Jebel area Thursday morning and took him to the Sheriff’s Office substation for questioning, Mosher said. Detectives felt they had enough information to make an arrest, so he was arrested at the substation and taken to Eagle County Jail. Bail had not been set as of 5 p.m., according to a spokeswoman at the detention center.
Mosher said it is against Sheriff’s Office policy to release the address of a suspect. Aguilar is from the El Jebel area but not from the El Jebel Mobile Home Park, according to information provided by the Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities identified Aguilar even though he is a minor because Colorado Open Records provisions allow a minor to be disclosed when they are accused of certain felonies and when a weapon is used, Mosher said. The Eagle County District Attorney’s office will determine if Aguilar is to be charged as an adult.
The time of arrest wasn’t available. Mosher said she was notified at 10:30 a.m. that a suspect was in custody. Sheriff’s detectives were unaware of prior contact with Aguilar on criminal matters, Mosher said.
The sheriff’s office said the robber went into El Jebel Liquors at about 5 p.m. Monday and confronted the female clerk with a handgun and a knife. He ordered her to empty the cash drawer into a plastic bag. He received about $400 and fled on foot. The suspect was last seen in the El Jebel City Market area. Deputies from the Eagle County and Pitkin County sheriff’s offices and officers with Basalt Police Department searched for the suspect without luck. Pictures from the surveillance cameras were released by the sheriff’s office and published in newspapers on Wednesday.
A surveillance system was installed at the El Jebel Plaza and adjacent property several years ago by the owners, the Crawford family, and it is maintained by the current corporate owner, Crawford Properties LLC.
“I bet the cameras have been in use at least a dozen times,” said Adele Hubbell, a member of the extended Crawford family. In recent years the cameras led to the identification and capture of a man who broke into the now closed Fine Line Restaurant and made himself nachos before starting a small fire. They got an image that helped identify the robber of Vectra Bank in Orchard Plaza. The cameras have also helped identify a party that lost a wallet and they helped establish who stole clothes from a laundry at the plaza, Hubbell said.
