Basalt student newspaper staff captures four awards in state contest

The Basalt High School student newspaper, The Longhorn Roundup, won four awards in its class in the Colorado High School Press Association Best of Colorado Individual Student Contest.

Basalt was judged in Classification 1, which is composed of schools with enrollment of as many as 800 students. Basalt has enrollment closer to 400. There were 13 schools in its class and a record number of entries.

The Longhorn staff collected the following accolades:



• First place — Lifestyle news feature, “One Nation Under Stress,” by Genevieve Lawry, senior; Katie Hankinson, senior; and Arielle Lyons, senior.

• Second place — Editorial cartoon, “Barakhood,” by Alex Nakagawa, senior.



• Third place — Facing-page design, “Have You Met Mary Jane?” by Hankinson and Lawry.

• Honorable mention — News feature, “A Touchy Subject,” by Lawry.

The Longhorn had a staff of six this year, its third year in publication. The adviser is Sheryl Barto.
