Body found on Grass Mesa still unidentified

RIFLE — Area authorities believe they know the identity of a woman found on Grass Mesa near Rifle on Dec. 12, but are not releasing the information until they have informed the next of kin, according to Garfield County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Walter Stowe.

The body of a woman was found between 11 a.m. and noon on Thursday, by a deputy, and Stowe said on Friday that foul play is not suspected at this time.

He said the body was found lying on the steep part of a gully near the main road into the subdivision on the mesa, where she may have fallen and then tried unsuccessfully clamber back up to the top.

Stowe said no further information will be forthcoming until a coroner’s report is completed and filed with the sheriff’s office.
