Tonight’s bridge closure, detour canceled

Grand Avenue bridge project officials have canceled a previously planned Grand Avenue bridge closure and Interstate 70 detour onto Sixth Street that was to have been in place tonight, after overhead utility work related to the bridge construction project was completed overnight Thursday.

A second night of work had been anticipated after bridge construction crews were unable to do the work during the planned I-70 Glenwood Canyon closure earlier this week. But the contractor was able to complete the utility installation on the pedestrian bridge one night early, according to bridge project officials.

The Grand Avenue bridge was closed from 8 p.m. Thursday until 6 a.m. today so that the utility work could be done.

The Colorado Department of Transportation closed I-70 through Glenwood Canyon on Wednesday for continuing rockfall mitigation work, but had to postpone the work on Thursday due to downdrafts that forced crews to halt helicopter work. CDOT plans to reschedule that project, probably sometime in August.

Next week, bridge construction crews will continue utility work along Sixth Street between Laurel and Pine streets.
