In recognition of its evolution as a medical and care facility in the Grand Valley, Hospice & Palliative Care of Western Colorado announced its name change to HopeWest at the end of May. It’s also celebrating 20 years of business this month.

“The name ‘hospice’ no longer says it all,” HopeWest Chief Administrative Officer Terri Walter said. “Our organization has grown to be a collection of many programs serving those who are coping with serious illness and grief, not just hospice care. We chose HopeWest as a name that could represent the broad scope of our growing programs.”

Walter added that HopeWest’s umbrella spans: Hospice Western Colorado, HopeWest Palliative Care, HopeWest Kids, as well as HopeWest Grief Support. Heirlooms for Hospice, Spoons Bistro & Bakery, and Artful Cup coffee shop.

“It was really an evolution in the programs that we offer,” HopeWest’s spokeswoman Alyssa Hampson said. “As we’ve developed into an organization that does far more than offer hospice care we wanted a name that reflected that.”

According to a news release, “HopeWest was founded in 1993 as a freestanding nonprofit organization,” managed by local volunteers (its board of directors). HopeWest “serves more than 7,000 square miles in western Colorado.” It’s mission is to serve those impacted by “serious illness and grief,” and office locations are found in Grand Junction, Montrose, Delta and the Plateau Valley. The organization has 300 employees and 1,400 volunteers.
