An industrial fire in Carbondale was extinguished Tuesday before it could spread or explode.

Carbondale and Rural Fire Protection District crews arrived at Distinguished Boards & Beams at 698 Merrill Ave. just after noon to find smoke coming from the hopper of the dust collection system and two dumpsters.

Carbondale Police Department, Basalt Fire Department and Waste Management also responded to scene.

It took about an hour to put out the sawdust in the elevated system using an aerial ladder truck. No one was hurt.

“This had the potential of becoming a very dangerous fire, with the possibility of a dust explosion,” said Carbondale Deputy Fire Chief Rob Goodwin. “The majority of the fire was contained to the main dust collector, and the safety features appear to have worked and prevented further fire spread.”

The fire is under investigation but it is not believed to be suspicious.
