Carbondale markets razed; plans unknown

Plenty of Carbondale residents and officials are curious about what will come of 579 Main St., the downtown property where the former Dandelion and Theresa’s market buildings were demolished in recent days.

So far, the property owner seems to be the only one certain about what will replace them over time. The Carbondale mayor and town manager say they haven’t been clued in to what will happen to the property.

The two buildings sat on a single parcel owned by Equanimous Holdings LLC, a company linked to Bren Simon. Simon, the widow of shopping mall tycoon Melvin Simon, owns numerous properties in downtown Carbondale under different company names.

Earlier this year, tenants of the two buildings at 579 Main St. were informed their leases would not be renewed and given a move-out date of July 1. Besides the markets, Sweet ColoraDough doughnut shop had a part-time storefront in the small complex.

Town Manager Jay Harrington said Equanimous Holdings plans to simply plant grass and leave the property as open space for a time, and the building department has not received any application for a new use.

As far as what kind of development might replace the Dandelion Market, Theresa’s Market and Sweet ColoraDough, “I’m dying to know, too,” Mayor Dan Richardson said Monday.

Leaving that property as open space “certainly wouldn’t be ideal,” Richardson said. “Our downtown is pretty darn vibrant,” so some commercial development that fits in would be best, he said. Carbondale’s Main Street is also already served by open space at the Fourth Street Plaza, he noted.

It also wasn’t clear why the property owner was in a rush to tear those buildings down if the property is simply going to be open space for the time being. Having been in some land use projects, there are a million possible drivers that are not obvious, Richardson offered.

The Post Independent did not hear back on Monday from a representative of the property owner.
