Colorado Mountain College turns 50 this year, and CMC Rifle also celebrates its 10th anniversary with a fine arts exhibit that opens Friday.

It is the second spring for the show, which this year will feature work exclusively by Garfield County artists. Everyone is invited to attend with the art opening and welcome reception starting at 6:30 p.m.

More than 50 Garfield County artists will be featured in the exhibit, though any artist living in Garfield County was invited to submit up to three pieces for judging, explained the show’s curator, Alice Beauchamp. Out of a total of 208 pieces submitted, judges selected 68 pieces for the show.

“The pieces will be displayed down the main corridor in a very long hallway so students will get to look at them as they are entering class,” she said. “It was fun to hear comments from students as we were hanging them up.”

In addition to the main display, there will be an exhibit featuring 25 pieces submitted by CMC students.

After the success of last year’s art show, which featured only student art, CMC decided to continue the event and open it up to all of Garfield County to make it the center of the 50th anniversary.

“This year we wanted to make it a little more broad and decided to open it up to all of Garfield County,” Beauchamp said.

Art featured will include everything from photography and watercolors to woodworking and sculpture.

“It is quite a diverse show,” she said.

Art show jurors Randy Milhoan, owner and operator of Milhoan Studios in Minturn, and Jim Cotter, owner of J. Cotter Galleries in Vail and Beaver Creek, will announce the show’s prize winners, with cash awards ranging from $50 to $250.

Those interested in attending can RSVP at CMCBecauseofYou.org/campus-celebrations/ or call 970-625-1871.
