Coroner IDs body found outside Rifle

A body discovered in the Fravert area northwest of Rifle earlier this month has been identified by the Garfield County Coroner’s Office as that of Jeremiah J. Michaelis of Rifle.

The body was discovered on Oct. 2 during a search by Garfield County deputies. The search concentrated in the Fravert area following reports that Michaelis was last seen in that area in early September.

The coroner’s office waited for positive identification of the remains through dental records and DNA before releasing the identity, a sheriff’s office news release said.

Michaelis was nearing the end of six months’ probation after pleading guilty to misdemeanor theft in a Garfield County counterfeiting case from January.

The coroner is waiting for the final autopsy to be completed to determine the probable cause of death. Authorities at this point do not suspect foul play.
