Downtown Market sizzles in summer’s heat with hot deals

As summer temperatures hover near triple digits, Glenwood’s Downtown Market is the place to be to get the hottest deals on early produce, cool mangoes, Italian ices, specialty coffee, beautiful jewelry, unique crafts and sizzling hot foods off the grill. Many vendors have been selling out of popular items quickly, so marketgoers need to come early for the best choices. Then stay for great music and gorgeous evening meanderings throughout the market and in the park among friends and community.

The market continues to double EBT benefits up to $20 per family per week, making it possible for everyone to take advantage of local produce; locally raised meats; raw, unfiltered honey; and baked goods. The new Double Up Bucks is made possible by a USDA grant for markets all over the state. Because of the Double Up Bucks program we are now able to double WIC benefits.

Kathryn Bedell, owner of Roan Creek Ranch, has returned to the market this year with great selections of locally raised grass-fed lamb, pork and beef. You can pay from 14-25 percent for water in the meat you purchase from the supermarket, so you are not only getting a fabulous cut of the tastiest meat you’ve ever eaten, but you also are getting great value when you purchase local meats from Roan Creek Ranch. Jonny Bowden extols the many nutritional aspects of grass-fed organic meat in his book, “The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth.” “The fat content of grass-fed beef is quite different from that of grain fed because the diet of the animals significantly alters their fatty-acid composition.” Jonny writes, “The ratio of omega-6 fatty acids to omega-3 fatty acids in our diet is of enormous importance to our health. And the ruminants like cows produce another very important fat called CLA (conjugated linoleic acid), which has long been investigated for its anti-cancer activity as well as for its ability to reduce fat accumulation.”

In the Music Booth this week we are thrilled to have The Scones back again. The Scones are from Paonia and will be rocking out with their brand of Americana, soul and blues. The Scones have an entertaining show with first-class guitar work and glorious harmonies. The group is composed of Helen Highwater on bass, Harry Knipe on drums and Rick Stockton playing guitar and banjo and writing songs. Each member brings a unique ingredient that blends seamlessly into the band that fits the Americana sound that touches on blues, soul, country and classic rock and roll.

Basalt town government has it wrong in TABOR snafu, former mayors say

Current Basalt officials say the town government has violated the Colorado Taxpayers’ Bill of Right by increasing the property tax mill levy over the prior years 10 times since the mid-2000s. Two former mayors contend the mill levy could be adjusted in any given year as long as it didn’t exceed the mill levy in 1994. It’s a $2 million question.
