Farewell to the flag

The American flag is the centerpiece of many Veterans’ Day ceremonies, but on Tuesday Glenwood Springs Elementary students were treated to something particularly special: a flag retirement ceremony.

As 500 kids did their best to maintain a reverent silence, members of the Glenwood Springs Boy Scout Troop 225 lowered a faded, fraying flag from the mast in front of the school, folded it and presented it to Navy veteran Monica Blake and Army veteran Jeff Cheney.

Blake, a staff member, and Cheney, the parent of a former student, placed the flag in a waiting fire and the crowd gasped as the symbol of the nation was wreathed in flame in accordance with proper flag retirement protocol. When only ash remained, the scouts hoisted a new flag, the Glenwood Springs High School ROTC troop saluted and students returned to class as silently as they could.
