Garfield County Sheriff’s Report
Editor’s note: The Garfield County Sheriff’s Department reports the following incidents and arrests. Summonses or arrests merely indicate an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless found guilty in court.
Dog bite: At 7:02 p.m. on Sept. 6, deputies were called about a dog bite in the Rifle area. The dog was quarantined at the Rifle animal shelter.
Busted: At 9:43 a.m. on Sept. 10, deputies responded to a call in the Rifle area, investigated, and arrested and jailed Michael A. Newton, 44, of Silt, on charges of introducing contraband in the second degree, “authorized possession of an unauthorized container,” and illegal possession of a controlled substance.
Unattended death: At 12:57 p.m. on Sept. 11, deputies responded to an unattended death. The case remains open pending a coroner’s report.
Sex offender registration: At 2:36 p.m. on Sept. 11, deputies were informed of a possible sex offender registration violation outside the town of Parachute. The matter is under investigation.
Unattended death: At 7:41 p.m. on Sept. 19, deputies responded to an unattended death in the New Castle area. The case remains open pending a coroner’s report.
Burglary: At 7:10 p.m. on Sept. 19, deputies responded to a reported burglary outside of New Castle. After investigating, they arrested and jailed Darien J. McKenna, 18, New Castle, on charges of second degree burglary and theft.
Sexual assault: at 11:33 a.m. on Sept. 20, deputies responded to a reported sexual assault near Glenwood Springs. The case remains under investigation.
Shotgun on the road: At 4:45 p.m. on Sept. 20, deputies were called regarding a piece of found property near Glenwood Springs. A black, pump action shotgun, badly damaged, was found in the 100 block of Sixth Street. An owner has not yet been identified, and the case remains under investigation.
Unattended death: At 9:14 p.m. on Sept. 25, deputies investigated an unattended death outside of Carbondale. No further information was available from the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office daily report to news media.
Trespassing: At 9:07 a.m. on Sept. 25, deputies were advised of a criminal trespass near Rifle. After investigating they arrested Michael Lee Castol, 51, of Rifle, and summoned him into court.
Drunk or drugged driving: At 4:02 a.m. on Sept. 26, deputies stopped a vehicle outside of Silt for speeding. After investigating, they arrested Kacy Marie Doyal, 23, of Rifle on charges of failure to show proof of insurance, speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Federal lands in and around the Roaring Fork Valley will be under a Stage 1 fire restrictions starting Friday, officials with the White River National Forest and Bureau of Land Management announced Wednesday morning.
